Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

How do I import my bank transactions?

Download a CSV export from your bank's website, then drag and drop it into Inspense's import page. We automatically detect formats from major banks like Chase, Bank of America, Amex, and Wells Fargo. For other banks, use our CSV column mapper to select the right columns.

What file formats are supported?

Inspense supports CSV (comma-separated values) files. Most banks allow you to export transactions in this format from their online banking portal.

How do the keyboard shortcuts work?

Press H for Home expenses, B for Business, C for Corporation, and S to Skip. Hold Shift while pressing a key to apply the category to all similar transactions at once. Press ? to see all shortcuts.

AI Features

What do AI credits do?

AI credits let Inspense suggest categories for your transactions automatically. Each suggestion uses one credit. Your purchase includes 500 credits, which is typically 3-5 years of normal use.

What happens when I run out of credits?

You can add your own Anthropic API key in Settings to continue using AI features. You can also categorize transactions manually without AI - the app works perfectly fine without it.

Is my data sent to AI services?

Only merchant names and descriptions are sent for categorization. Amounts, account numbers, and personal information are never transmitted. All data processing happens locally on your Mac.

Data & Privacy

Where is my data stored?

All your transaction data is stored locally on your Mac in a SQLite database. It never leaves your computer. We cannot access your financial data.

Can I export my categorized transactions?

Yes! Go to the Export page to download a CSV file of your categorized transactions. This is perfect for sending to your accountant or importing into tax software.

How do I delete all my data?

Simply delete the Inspense app from your Mac. All data is stored locally within the app and will be removed when you uninstall it.

Technical Issues

The app won't open on my Mac

If you see a security warning, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click 'Open Anyway' next to Inspense. This is normal for apps downloaded outside the Mac App Store.

My CSV file isn't being recognized

Try opening the CSV in a text editor to check its format. If it uses unusual delimiters or encoding, save it as UTF-8 CSV. Our import wizard can handle most formats, but some very unusual exports may need manual column mapping.

Categories aren't saving correctly

Try restarting the app. If the issue persists, check that your Mac has sufficient disk space. Inspense needs write access to its application data folder.
